Decision block 01
Borrow the smallest amount that solves the problem
- Start with the actual expense gap, not the maximum amount available.
- Subtract insurance, assistance, cash on hand, provider payment plans or other funds before setting a request amount.
- Remember that fees can affect net proceeds and total repayment.
- If a smaller amount still solves the need, compare its payment burden before choosing more credit.
Decision block 02
Four affordability tests
Budget check only. A lender determines actual eligibility and payment terms.
| Test | Question | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Payment test | Can the scheduled payment be made from normal income? | Do not rely on overtime, a tax refund or another loan unless it is already certain. |
| Essentials test | What remains after rent, food, utilities, transportation and required debt? | A payment that crowds out essentials is not affordable just because a lender approves it. |
| Shock test | Can you still pay after a difficult month? | Leave a cushion for irregular income or unexpected expenses. |
| Total-cost test | What will the credit cost if paid as agreed? | Compare APR, fees and total repayment—not just the first payment. |
Decision block 03
Repeated applications can make the situation worse
- A new lender application may involve a hard inquiry.
- Multiple denials can signal that the underlying budget, amount or credit issue has not changed.
- Read adverse-action reasons before repeating the same request.
- Use a smaller request, wait-and-improve path, provider plan or official assistance resource when that better fits the problem.
Decision block 04
If you accept an offer
- Save the lender agreement and disclosures.
- Record the first payment date and payment method.
- Know how to contact the lender or servicer.
- Keep enough cash in the payment account before an authorized debit.
- Contact the lender early if repayment becomes difficult.
Use the request only after checking affordabilityCTCLoans can route the request, but the lender offer should be accepted only if the payment and total cost fit your budget.
